SERAPHIC FIRE AND THE FIREBIRD CHAMBER ORCHESTRA
PRESENT THEIR SEASON FINALE,
King Arthur |
Miami FL- On May 13 at 7:30pm at the New World Center, Seraphic Fire will debut the final program of the ensemble’s 9th season. The program, King Arthur, is a brand new interpretation of the 16th century English composer Henry Purcell’s opera of the same name. Featuring a newly-commissioned script by award-winning playwright Laura Schellhardt, King Arthur gives a contemporary take on one of the English Baroque’s most celebrated operas and transforms the piece into a musical-dramatic mashup. Additional performances will be held at 8:00pm on May 14 at the New World Center, and 4:00pm on May 15 at All Saints Episcopal Church in Ft. Lauderdale.
King Arthur also marks Seraphic Fire’s much awaited ensemble debut at the New World Center.
First performed at the Dorset Garden, London in 1691, King Arthur is considered to be one of Henry Purcell’s most adventurous works. The plot is based on the battles between King Arthur’s Britons and the Saxons, and tells of raucous Arthurian tales.
Ms. Schellhardt, who literally wrote the book on screenwriting (Screenwriting for Dummies), was commissioned by Seraphic Fire to create a modern-language dramatic frame which would replace John Dryden’s original allegorical verse. ”Laura is translating Dryden’s story into language and emotions that a modern audience will enjoy,” says Seraphic Fire Artistic Director Patrick Dupré Quigley. “Her work is smart, witty and engaging – a perfect pairing with Seraphic Fire.”
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel describes Seraphic Fire as “the smartest, most creative, consistently excellent classical music ticket in South Florida” and the Miami Herald’s David Fleshler remarks that the Firebird Chamber Orchestra is “…clearly full of first-rate musicians…” Together under the direction of Artistic Director, Patrick Dupré Quigley, these two ensembles produce performances that have been called “… brilliantly successful,” by Alan Becker of the South Florida Classical Review. Lawrence Budmen of the Miami Herald describes the two ensembles as “impeccable” “remarkable” and “superb”.
Tickets start at $15 and are available online at SeraphicFire.org. Tickets are also available by phone. For the New World Center performances, call 305-673-3331. For Ft. Lauderdale call 888-544-FIRE.
