GRAMMY®-Nominated Ensemble’s Free Summer Kids Camp engages disadvantaged Dade County students

MIAMI, FL – The Miami Choral Academy–an initiative of South Florida’s GRAMMY-nominated chamber choir, Seraphic Fire–will host a free summer music camp for its students from July 2nd – 13th, 2012 on the campus of New World School of the Arts. Students, who come from Miami-Dade Public Elementary schools in low-income areas, will spend two weeks working on high-level music and performance skills with a staff of professional musicians. Students’ participation is provided at no cost to participants or their families.

The 200 young vocalists of the Miami Choral Academy are elementary students and residents of Miami-Dade County’s most disadvantaged communities. Participating in the upcoming summer camp will be the 50 members of the Miami Choral Academy’s Honors Chamber Choir–a collection of students that have demonstrated exemplary leadership skills and a commitment to the program. Students will spend two weeks at the region’s arts magnet high school learning singing skills, sight reading, music history, performance comportment and life lessons. All courses are taught by professional-level musicians.

The Miami Choral Academy provides a tuition-free music education during the school year and employs a research-tested curriculum that focuses on making connections between music and academics. Its students have shown a marked improvement in math, language arts and reading comprehension. With the help of active parent involvement, the students have demonstrated a significant boost in confidence levels.

The camp will conclude on Friday, July 13th with a free, public concert at the Prometeo Theatre on Miami-Dade College’s Wolfson Campus at 1:00pm. Tickets are free and available at the door.
