New Video Release: Danzas del Silencio

A Video World-Premiere Performance

In anticipation of our 2021-22 Season, we are releasing a new recording every other Friday for your enjoyment. Today we present Danzas del Silencio, composed by Alvaro Bermudez and recorded in May 2021 at Comber Hall, Church of the Little Flower in Coral Gables, FL. Find out more about the composition below:

Colombian-American composer and long-time Miami community member Alvaro Bermudez composed Danzas del Silencio to a text by Colombian poet Oscar Hernandez Monsalve. Written in honor of the composer’s late father, Danzas uses traditional Colombian dance rhythms combined with a 20th-century text to create a choral suite that subtly references the form of Johann Sebastian Bach’s orchestral Ouvertures. At times lamenting, cheerful, desolate, and driving, Danzas evokes the sounds of the composer’s adolescence in Cali, Colombia. The composer accompanies Seraphic Fire for this world-premiere performance. Learn more about Alvaro’s process of taking this piece from concept to concert here.

Danzas del Silencio was commissioned by Seraphic Fire in partnership with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Danzas del Silencio

Mia de todo el tiempo

Mia del olvido imposible

De las manos delgadas

Y de los pies besados

Cercana y dulce

Extraña y conocida

Mia de todos los aromas

Y todos los colores

Cuando sonries mia

Y cuando llegas o no llegas

Mia entre mis ojos

Y mis necesidades

Sola mia

Pareces aire musical

Tiempo que canta

Pluma inventada

Desde un viento blanco

Para no ser volada ni violada

Solo pluma y viento

Nada mas que ala sueño y viento

Mine, of all time

Mine, impossible to forget

Of thin hands

and kissed feet

Near and sweet,

strange and known.

Mine, of every aroma

and every color

When you smile, mine

When you arrive, or not

Mine, between my eyes

and in my needs

Only mine,

as is the word that always lives in us

Mine, of all time,

since the first time

Until the final illuminated shadow.

Mine without remedy,

and without remedy, yours

The name, which is wind, lives longer than the man

Man is dust,

the name a sound

It survives its master

and his old flesh

The name and its music

They sing the burial

of the owner and his journey

And in the longest bone

The names will sing their life and rhythm

And in the end, ash will be defeated by a song

I hear you

You seem to be from a lark

You seem to be a musical air

Time that sings,

an invented feather

From a white wind

Not to be flown or violated

Only feather and wind

Nothing more than wing, dream, and wind
