Miami-based composer Alvaro Bermudez composed Orpheus With His Lute in 2017 for Seraphic Fire’s 15th Anniversary. With Orpheus, Bermudez sets a song from William Shakespeare’s Henry VIII in combination with the “In paradisum” text from the Latin requiem mass. This world-premiere recording features the composer accompanying Seraphic Fire on the guitar.
Orpheus With His Lute
Orpheus with his lute made trees, and the mountain tops that freeze, bow themselves, when he did sing;
To his music, plants and flow’rs ever sprung as sun and show’rs, there had made a lasting spring.
In Paradisum deducant te angeli: in tuo adventu suscipiat te Martyres, et perdeucant te in civitatem santam Jerusalem.
Everything that heard him play, even the billows of the sea,
Hung their heads and then lay by.
In sweet music is such art, killing care and grief of heart.
Fall asleep or hearing die.
Chorus Angelorum te suscipiat, et cum Lazaro quondam paupere aeternam habeas requiem.
