Seraphic Fire afficionados can look forward to two musical events in the month of February featuring music focused on finding peace and experiencing love.

In Pursuit of Peace

February 6, 2021 @ 4:00pm EST

Live Pre-Concert Conversation begins @ 3:30pm EST

MIAMI – This Seraphic Fire program explores humanity’s continual quest for peace. Samuel Barber set the anonymous poems of Irish monks from the 8th to the 13th centuries to music he composed in the 20th century. This cycle of 10 Hermit Songs is a meditation on solitude, isolation, and the simple joys of life. It was written for Leontyne Price who performed the cycle at the Library of Congress in 1953 with Barber as her accompanist. For this performance, Seraphic Fire will feature singers Clara Osowski, Brad Diamond, and Rebecca Myers who are recording respectively in Minnesota, Alabama, and Pennsylvania.

The second composer featured is Steve Reich, renowned for his contribution to minimal music beginning in the 1960s. A special broadcast of the 2016 performance of Reich’s The Desert Music by Seraphic Fire and New World Symphony, conducted by Patrick Quigley, raises the duality of war and peace, and also questions the lengths humankind will go to achieve its goals. Based on poetry by William Carlos Williams, this groundbreaking minimalist masterpiece fuses varied harmonies, counterpoint, and sung texts.

On April 13, 2016, The Miami Herald wrote “The combination of the New World Symphony and Seraphic Fire on Saturday night… was a match made in musical heaven” and “Patrick Quigley’s chorale was nothing short of superb.”
