Seraphic Fire joins four other choral organizations in the inaugural year of funding

MIAMI, FL – The Ann Stookey Fund for New Music, in its first year of funding, has awarded Seraphic Fire a grant to fund a new work by composer Jake Runestad. The work, to be approximately 15 minutes in length, will be for SATB choir and string quartet. It will draw its text from various poems by spiritual mystics of several faith traditions focused on love and the human experience. The world premiere will be delivered in Miami in October 2015 as part of Seraphic Fire’s 14th Season debut.

Seraphic Fire is excited for the opportunity to work with Jake Runestad once again. In December 2012, Seraphic Fire delivered the world premiere of three works commissioned by the ensemble and composed by Runestad: Sleep, Little Baby, Sleep; Fear Not, Dear Friend; and Nada Te Turbe. In May 2013, Seraphic Fire released the world premiere recording of Runestad’s I Will Lift Mine Eyes on the chart-topping disc, Seraphic Fire.

The Ann Stookey Fund for New Music supports the commissioning, performance, and recording of new musical works, with a particular focus on choral works.

Seraphic Fire is widely regarded as one of the most important professional vocal ensembles in the United States. An American All-Star ensemble made up of the best ensemble singers from across the United States, Seraphic Fire saw two recordings—Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem and A Seraphic Fire Christmas—receive nominations in the Best Choral and Best Small Ensemble categories, respectively, of the 2012 GRAMMY® Awards. The ensemble’s repertoire and recording catalogue spans over one thousand years of sacred music, from Gregorian chant to newly-commissioned works.
